42 CATALOGUE OF VASES.

Exterior : (a) Youth (chlamys round neck, r. hand raised) approaching
from r. a diota which stands upright. On 1. a youth (himation over 1. shoulder)
leaning back and looking into trefoil oinochoe in his r. hand. In the field,
imitation inscriptions, (b) In centre, diota as in (a). On 1. a youth (himation
over 1. shoulder) dancing; on r. a nude youth advances holding up keras.
In the field imitation inscriptions.

E 3. KYLIX. Old No. 814. Ht. Sr\ in. Diam. 11Jg in. Formerly in possession of

Basseggio in Rome. Klein, Meistersig} p. 101, no. 2. Much shattered, but nothing wanting.
Outline of hair incised throughout exterior scenes : purple wreaths and tails of Seileni ; no
traces of inner markings, except on forehead of figure in exterior (a). Interior, black-figure :
exterior, red-figure. On each side of each handle a large palmette.

Interior: Youth (wreathed, with short chiton, chlamys with white patterns)
holding two spears, riding to r. HI$+VVO$EPOIE$EN, 'Ia^v\o<; liroir^crev.

Exterior: (a) Between eyes, Seilenos (wreathed with ivy, ithyphallic)
holding in r. hand keras, on 1. pelta attached to a cord over his r. shoulder,
striding in crouching attitude to r. Above, EPIKTETO$, 'E7riVr??To?.

(b) Between eyes, similar figure, holding in 1. a fluted trefoil oinochoe,
blowing a trumpet which he holds in r., and which is attached to a phorbeia
over his mouth : on 1. pelta as in (a). He runs to r., looking back. Above,
EAPAJCDEN (sic) eypa{<pa)ev.

E 4. KYLIX. Old No. 854. Ht. Sf in. Diam. I2f in. Vulci. Durand Coll. No. 893. Murray,

Designs from Greek Vases, no. I ; Klein, Meistersig.2 p. 97. No important injury. Interior,
black-figure : exterior, red-figure. On each side of each handle a large palm-leaf ornament.

Interior: Doe springing to r., head thrown back: around, $OVAX JMnOH

Exterior: On each side, a pair of eyes, with petal of anthemion between
them. Beneath each handle EPOIEJEN ©VfflEI©IAE$, 'Eirolriaev QvcpeidiSvs.

Murray, Designs from Greek Vases, no. 2 ; Klein, Euphronios2,^. 298. Repaired and restored,
but not in important parts of design. Outline of hair incised throughout : wreaths and
inscriptions in purple, very roughly drawn. Handle ornament as preceding.

Interior : within thin red circle, a Jumper: a wreathed athlete, bending to r.
to lift large halteres from the ground. Around, HOTAISSOMX 6 iral? koXos.

Exterior, between eyes: (a) A tall thin athlete, wreathed, stooping to r.
as if to pick up something : neck badly drawn, (b) A stele, or goal post (?).

On base is a graffito gONA-gAMAX Ka/otowo? (?). Cf. the Memnon kylix in
Munich Cat. No. 1087, which has the name Ka/ca?.
