(stethodcsma ?), a mantle, bracelets and earrings. Behind Heracles is a votive
tripod, resting on a Doric column, with necking of egg pattern. On the 1.
Athene stands en face, but looking to r., her 1. hand resting on her hip, and
holding upright in her r. her spear; she wears a long chiton with apoptygma,
aegis, helmet with visor decorated with stars, and earrings ; her shield (device,
a star in a small circle) rests on edge against the foot of the column and against
her side. On the r. of Nike a wreathed youth in a chlamys is seated on raised
ground to 1., conversing with Heracles ; in his 1. he holds upright two spears,
and places his r. on his r. shoulder. Behind him stands a youth in chlamys and
sandals, with petasos hanging at his back; his 1. rests on his hip, in his r. he
holds upright two spears.

{b) Three draped ephebi: this design is destroyed.

ville, ii, pi. 38 ; Inghirami, Vast Fitt. pi. 80. Late stage of good period ; careful drawing in
parts. Brown inner markings. Ornaments as E 505.

(a) Two jumpers and a paidotribes. The paidotribes, a bearded man
closely draped in a heavy mantle, stands on 1., holding a short forked switch. In
the centre is an ephebos with haltercs, preparing to leap to the r. On the r.,
an ephebos en face, looking to L, with halteres in his hands hanging at his sides.

(p) A draped ephebos with a mantle which passes over the back of his
head, between two draped ephebi confronted, staff in hand.

E 500. BELL-CRATER. Old No. 1290. Ht. I2| in. Diam. 11J in. Blayds Coll., 1849. Late

stage of good period. Ornaments as E 505.

(a) Eos pursuing Kephalos. Eos, with long chiton, a'mantle, and a broad
fillet, runs to r., laying her r. on the shoulder of Kephalos, a youth in a heavy
mantle, who flees, looking back. On the 1. a similar youth, with a fillet, moves
away to 1., looking back.

(H) Same as E 499 {!?), but the central figure is to 1. and has head uncovered.

E 501. BELL-CRATER. Ht. 15 in. Diam. I2| in. Santa Maria di Capua. Temple Coll.

Style and ornaments as E 500.

(a) Eros playing astragali. On the r. Eros, closely draped in a mantle,
with wings raised, is seated to 1. on a square base resting on a plinth ; he stoops
forward, supporting on the back of his r. hand a number of astragali ; a heap of
others lie on the ground beside it. In the centre stands a nude ephebos
(Ganymedes) leaning on a staff, who places with his r. a circlet on the head
of Eros. On the 1. a second ephebos, closely draped in a mantle, stands
looking on, resting his 1. on a staff.
