On the r. of this a woman is seated to r. on a diphros, holding out in her 1. a
ball ; over her hangs a festooned taenia. Confronting her on r. stands a woman,
lifting wool out of a calathos ; behind her hang a pair of sandals, one to front,
the other in profile. Next on r. a woman, with hair looped up, holds out in her
r. a phiale (?) towards a woman seated en face on a diphros, who looks at her,
raising with her r. a fold of her drapery from her r. shoulder, and about to
extend her 1. towards the phiale. Between them a calathos with wool, over
which is a festooned taenia. On the r. of the seated one hangs a pair of sandals,
as before. Next is a woman with hair looped up, seated to r. on a diphros ;
over her a taenia. Then a woman facing her, and lifting wool from a calathos ;
two more sandals as before ; and lastly, a woman with hair looped, closely draped,
confronting one who holds out to her in her r. hand a ball ; between these two
is a calathos with wool, above which hangs a wreath.

D 13. OINOCHOE. Ht. S^ in. Locri. Castellani, 1873. Style of Brygos. The neck, handle,
and foot are glazed black ; the surface of the neck is slightly raised above that of the shoulder.
The edge of the lip is coloured purple ; at the base of the handle is an inverted palmette below
a strip of egg pattern, and below the moulding on the shoulder is a band of tongue pattern ; all
red on black. The body is covered with a white engobe, on which the design is drawn in black
outline. Purple is used for fillet, bracelets, sandals, wool, and spindle. Light brown for inner
markings and upper folds of chiton and inscription'. The hair is drawn in dark brown lines on
a wash of light brown. Eye archaic. Below, a thin brown line.
A woman in a long sleeved, dotted chiton, a bordered himation, and
sandals, with earrings, bracelets, and hair wound into a ball on the neck and
fastened with a fillet, standing to r., twisting between the thumb and first
finger of her r. hand a thread from a hank of wool on a distaff which she holds
up with her 1. On the r., HEPAI^ KAVE, 1) irais Ka\i],

Heracles. Fine style. The neck, handle, and foot are glazed black; the remainder is covered
with a white engobe. On the shoulder is a palmette decoration of unusual design, which has
been engraved in the soft clay before the white engobe was laid on ; above and below the
design is a band of egg pattern, in the same technique, between brown lines. Drawing in black
outline. The helmet of Athene, alternate folds of her drapery, and the lion-skin, are all painted
in a light brown wash ; the same colour is used for details of anatomy. Eye in profile.
Athene pouring wine for Heracles. On the 1. Heracles, a youthful nude
figure (head broken away), leans forward, resting his body against the end of his
club, on which is his lion-skin; the. top of. the club rests on a raised hillock,
from which a plant sprouts on the r. He holds out in his r. hand a cantharos
towards Athene, who extends with her r. a fluted oinochoe (part broken away) ;
her spear rests against her 1. shoulder, and she wears a long sleeved chiton,
