One leg is restored.
As last, but with oval body tailed off to a point behind, no pellets on lip ;
flat loop handle. The body is regularly moulded in oblique flutings. Coarse
black ware, fired to reddish brown on neck, with remains of polish.

A 33. BIRD-SHAPED VASE. L. 6J in. From Yortan, as A 1,
apparently a spout in- front are broken away, and one leg is restored ;
three holes are broken in the body.
The mouth was cut away as in the preceding narrow-
necked jugs, and the body stands on three short tapered
legs ; the handle was a flat loop. The body is roughly
furrowed across the shoulders and from breast to tail in
imitation of plumage. Highly burnished black ware
discoloured light grey and brown. (Fig. 8.)
A 34. RIBBED JUG. Ht. 5i in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. One side of lip chipped. PLATE
Globular body with slightly flattened shoulder, short upright neck, and
wide spread lip ; the handle is a flat loop arched from lip to shoulder. The body
is moulded in twenty-one unequally spaced vertical ribs. Heavy black ware
with remains of polish.
[For vertical fluting at Troy see 5.6". 2263, a rougher fabric]
A 35. KNOBBED JUG. lit. 4 in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. Most of
the lip is broken away.
Shape as last, but with flatter shoulder, and handle rising
sharply above lip. On edge of shoulder are seven pointed knobs,
and another in the same line on base of handle. In each space
between the knobs is painted in white colour a group of four thin
lines hanging vertically from a white line round the neck. Very
fine highly polished black ware. (Fig. 9.) Figi Q = A 3S.

A 36. BEAKED JUG. Ht. 81- in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc.
Spherical body with flat base, narrow neck prolonged upwards arid forwards
in a tapered beak, round loop handle from lip to shoulder. Very roughly made ;
brown clay originally covered with a bright red slip, which has partly flaked off.
There is a large black patch on base and body.
[The beak is strange among the Yortan forms, but is usual at Troy : S.S. 617, etc.]
A 37. LONG-NECKED JUG. Ht. 7iin. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. Corner of lip chipped.
As last, but finely shaped and without the beak ; the lip is cut level on
top, oblique behind, with turned-out edges. Light brown clay with bright red
wash which has partly perished.
[The slender form and clear colour resemble those of Syrian and Cypriote fabrics, as
C 48, etc.]
