VASES OF THE FIRST (NEOLITHIC) PERIOD (A 101-A 108).

BOWL with foot. Diam. of mouth 7! in. From Tsangli. The vase is restored from Plate III.
two fragments, which give the form with certainty, but the height of the base is not known
and has been taken from the following example. As Aiu>;w nal SeWXo, fig. 76 ; Prehistoric
Thessaly, fig. 40, p. 13 (A 1).

Hand-made, with pared and polished sur-
face ; fine, hard clay fired to bright red usually
throughout, but the fracture is sometimes grey.
Angular, metallic form; a shallow bowl with
hollow upright sides, two tubular handles
springing from rim to shoulder, and wide conical
base ; on each side of each handle is a low boss,
which suggests a rivet, resting on the sharp edge
of the shoulder.

BASE of bowl. Ht. 2j in. From Tsangli. Half is restored, but the height and shape
are certain.

Form and fabric as last, but decorated with undulating bands of lighter red
or yellow in the polished surface, which is partly burned to a dark colour,
as A 127, etc. (Fig. 30.)

LEG from vase. Ht. 2J in. From Tsangli.

Roughly modelled in the shape of a human leg, with projecting foot;
broken at top. Fine polished red ware.

A hemispherical bowl with upright rod handle which is broken away.
Coarse clay, with fine surface of clear red colour : thick ware, roughly moulded.

Dark red clay, rough surface. The bowl is conical with flattened base, and
the handle was a high loop arched laterally on the rim.

Deep hemispherical shape, pointed towards the base, which is slightly
flattened. Pale yellowish clay, unpolished ; thick, heavy ware.

(A 2). Restored from a section which gives lip, base and decoration.

Flat open bowl, with straight sides slightly splayed at the top. Fine light
brown clay, with impressed and painted decoration. The impressions are thin
