lines of uniform width : at base one, at the lip two, and on the body a zigzag
band of four lines. The triangular spaces between these bands, and the edges
of lip and base, are painted red and polished.
A 108. BOWL with painted decoration. Ht,2$ in., diam.6J- in. From Tsangli. Restored from Plate
a fragment giving: lip, base, and pattern. As Prehistoric Thessaly, fig. 45, p. 14 (A 3 (3).
Shallow conical form with slightly splayed sides, flat base, plain lip. Red
clay covered, except on lower part inside, with a white slip, which has now
perished, but was originally thick and lustrous as in the fragments A 138, etc.
The design is drawn in bright red paint, which is also polished, and consists of a
large chevron, occupying half the circumference of the bowl, of two thin bands
with a broad band above them ; the broad band has a fringe of curved teeth on
its upper edge, and a solid triangle depending from the lip of the vase almost
touches its apex. This figure was certainly repeated on the other half of the
bowl, and there may have been some design in the open spaces above the lower
ends of the chevrons. On the edge of lip and base is a plain red line. Inside
the bowl on the upper part of the sides, where the white slip is applied, is a
pattern of sweeping curves which cannot be reconstructed from this fragment.

A 109. BOWL. lit. 4j in. From D'imini, Half the vase is restored. ' PLATE'

fired to reddish brown and black, with lustrous surface. One boss, pierced
vertically with two large holes for strings, is preserved : there were no doubt two
of these.
[This vase may belong to the Second (Neolithic) Period : cf. tuftm ko\ 2e'o-(tXo, fig. 107
(B 1).]
A 110. BOWL. lit. 4 in. From Sesklo. Restored from a fragment giving lip and profile ; Plate
the size and form of the base are not known.
Deep globular body with angular shoulder, above which the sides slope
inwards to the straight lip. Very coarse dark clay fired to lighter brown and
black ; polished surface has apparently flaked off.

base and handle. As Prehistoric Thessaly, fig. 86 c, d. ° '
