79; Prehistoric Ihessaly, p. 91. Red ware, coarse stony clay with smooth outer surface,
smeared and pitted inside, as A 124, etc. The decoration consists on each fragment of a narrow
raised fillet with lines of white paint on either side. (Fig. 36.)
A 137l-2. FRAGMENTS, similar. L. 6 in., 5} in. From Sesklo. Fabric as last, but of deeper
red colour. There is a remarkable similarity of surface on the inside. Painted in dull white
colour with oblique bands of six or seven thin lines ; in no. 1 two such bands meet at an angle.

sometimes on both sides, with lustrous white slip, upon which are painted simple linear designs
in bright red colour. The patterns are usually oblique bands of thin parallel lines which cross
or join up at an angle. No. 1 has also a waved line forming loops inside the. edge, and a band
along the rim. No. 9, of coarser make, bears a bold chequer pattern. (Fig. 37.)

cit. The patterns are the same as those from Chaironeia, diagonal bands of thin parallels.
Where the fragment belongs to the point of crossing, these lines appear as a close lattice.
Nos. 1-4 have a waved band inside the lip, and 5 has a hatched band or. triangle in this place.

Red clay, stony and hard, covered with the usual white slip. This is covered with a coat of
bright red paint, and the designs are formed by scraping away the red colour so that the white
slip appears, and the surface is polished. The pattern on these fragments consists of closely-
set rows of short parallel strokes on both sides of the rim and on the outer curve of the handle.

A 141l-6. FRAGMENTS, similar. L. 3J in. to 2 in. From Lianokladi. The design consists of
sweeping groups of curved lines, one group springing from another at an angle. In no. 4 two
such groups are formed of waved lines. No. 5 has short strokes, as last, on both sides of the
lip. No. 6, the heavy rim of a vase, has slanting lines at wider intervals on the inside of the
lip, and a waved band on the outside of the shoulder, and is highly burnished over the design.

design of close zig-zag bands, no. 1 on both sides. Nos. 2 to 6 have sweeping lines, as last, on
the reverse side, in 2 with fringe at edge of group ; no. 7, a rim, has short strokes, and no. 8 a
diagonal chequer-pattern. (Fig. 37.)
