PREHISTORIC AEGEAN POTTERY.
SECOND (NEOLITHIC) PERIOD (A 176-A 222).
A 176-90. Painted pottery with designs in black or brown colour on red or buff clay,
and in black and red colours on clay ground or white slip. These fabrics belong
to the Second-(Neolithic) Period, and are probably survivals and developments of
the early red-on-white styles.
As Prehistoric Thessaly, pll. II, III (in colours), pp. 16, 17, (B 3 8, B 3 e, B 3 (, B 3 y).
A 176i-l2. FRAGMENTS. L. 2J in. to 1 in. From Drakhmani, as A 139. 'Black on buff' ware,
with simple linear designs, very scantily preserved. Thin lips of cups bearing horizontal, vertical
or diagonal bands, and a fringe of triangles (1-4) ; no. 5 shows the end of a single waved line,
and no. 6, apparently from the shoulder of a jug, has oblique lines radiating from the neck.
No. 12, which has a red wash on the surface, is pierced with a carefully bored hole. (Fig. 40.)
A 177i 3. FRAGMENTS of cups. L. 3I in. to ij in. From Tsangli. As Prehistoric Thessaly,
tig. 54 a, b, p. 101 (B 3 c). The shape of the cups was conical, with straight sides tapering
gently from the plain rim to a flat base. Sparse linear patterns in brown-black colour on the
pale brown clay. Vertical bands of three or four thin lines divide the surface into wide panels,
in which isolated zig-zag lines are set vertically or horizontally. At the lip are plain bands.
The decoration appears on both sides. (Fig. 40.)
A 178l-3. FRAGMENTS. L. 5 in. to 3-5- in. From Tsangli. /&'(/., B 3 8. From large vases ; the
designs are heavy zig-zag bands of thin lines with wide edging. No. 2 is of bright red clay.
A 1791-10. FRAGMENTS, similar. L. 1J in. to 5 in. From Tsangli. ' Black on buff' or ' black
on red' ware, as before. Fragments of cups or straight-sided bowls with plain bands at the
lip (1-4) : no. 1 has a waved band inside the rim, no. 2 a heavy curved stroke on the side ; and
with diagonal bands (5-6). No. 6 has a broad diagonal band of fine lattice on the inside.
No. 7 is a sherd of finely polished ware of pale colour, with thin lines and a pointed yoke in
dark brown paint. Nos. 8 and 9, apparently from bowls with curved shoulders, "nave broad
horizontal bands and borders of vertical panels. Some pieces are very similar to Dimini ware
of the black-on-red technique. No. 10 has a claw-like bunch of curved lines. (Fig. 40.)
A l'80l-2. FRAGMENTS, similar. L. 2~ in., i| in. From Tsani. No. 1, of bright red clay, has
a diagonal band of a thin line between two thick lines, and a band on each side of the lip.
No. 2, very thin, highly polished ware of dark brown colour, has plain black bands on both
sides.
A 181. FRAGMENT. L. 2} in. From Rakhmani. Coarse black clay with polished red
surface and painted patterns on both sides in black colour, as last. On the outside is a latticed
band of thin lines meeting a band of parallels ; on the inside a triangular figure. This may
be a fragment of Dimini ware, as before.
A 182l-5. FRAGMENTS. L. 3! in. to 2 in. From Tsangli. Patterns as before, but on a white
slip : these are probably fragments of three-colour ware (as A 183), with none of the red
painting preserved. Nos. 1 and 2 have broad angular bands of three thin lines with wide
edging ; 3 has a band of close lattice ; 4 and 5 have triangular chequer patterns. No. 2
has crossing bands on the inside.
A 183i-2. FRAGMENTS of three-colour ware. L. 4in. to:24in. From Tsangli. As Prehistoric
Thessaly, fig. 50, p. 100 (13 3y). From heavy bowls or plates on tall stems : no. 1 is part of a
