PREHISTORIC AEGEAN POTTERY.

A 232. FRAGMENT, with pierced boss. L. if in. From Zerelia. Pale brownish ware, fine

clay. On the smooth side is a small modelled boss pierced vertically.

A 233. FRAGMENT.with knob handle. L. 5 in. From Mesiani. Polished red ware, from a

large vase. The plain rim slopes upwards to a tall pointed knob swelling in front. (Fig. 46.)

A 234. HANDLE. L. 2} in. From Zerelia. Thick polished red ware, partly burnt black, with

a small flat loop handle at the lip. On the rim, where the handle joins it, stands a small boss.

A 235. HANDLE. L. 2J in. From Tsangli. Dark, roughly polished ware. Turned-out lip,

flat loop handle from neck to shoulder ; the handle is ridged in irregular oblique bars.

A 236 HANDLE. L. 4 in. From Dimini. Flat loop handle set vertically on the rim and

body of a large bowl. Fine brown clay with dark red wash.

A 237. HANDLE. L. 2\ in. From Zerelia. A flat loop, set with the edges to front and back.

Yellowish brown clay. An early ware.

A 2381-3. HANDLES. L. 4I- in., 3 in., 3-J- in. From Mesiani (.1) and Lianokladi. No. 1 has flat

raking shape with oval bend. Very fine polished brown ware, shading to black. No. 2
as Prehistoric Thessaly, fig. 134, P- '§5 (' raking handles'). No. 3 is a flat loop, as last ; light
brown clay with remains of dark red wash. No. 2 is also flat in the same sense, but is pointed
in the middle of the outer edge ; light brown clay. (Fig. 46 ; for similar handles see A 95 from
Macedonia.)

A 240i 3 SPOUT AND HANDLES of Bowls. L. /& in. to 2\in. From Dimini. For shape of

: ' bowl see Ll^vi ko.1 ScVkAo, fig. 152 ; Prehistoric Thessaly, fig. 23^ (Rakhmani), The vase was
boat-shaped, with plain rim, two upright lug-handles, a horse-shoe base (see following number),
and pierced bosses. These pieces are (1) a blunt tapering nose, (2) part of side with lug, and (3)
another lug-handle. They are all from different vases. Reddish brown clay, scraped and
polished. (Fig. 46.)

A 241 BASE of Bowl. L. 4I in. From Rakhmani. As Prehistoric Thessaly, fig. 230. Shape

'of bowl as last. The foot is a broken ring, like a horseshoe, and the beak of the vase (see

A 240) was immediately over the opening, so that when the bowl was tilted for pouring it would

stand firmly on the two points of the foot. Dark clay with rough light brown surface ; coarse

ware. (Fig. 46.)

A 242 FRAGMENT of perforated dish. L. 4J in. From Dimini. A shallow bowl irregularly

pierced with close holes. Hard red clay, very rough.

A 243 FRAGMENT of rim. L. 9 in. From Tsani. From a very large open bowl or dish.

Dark brown clay, with scratched surface, as if the wet clay had been wiped with a bunch of
coarse grass. Rough ware, but thin and even. (Similar striated ware occurs in Macedonia :
B.C.H., i9[7-9, i', P1- XI.)

. . FRAGMENT of moulded jar. L. 7-J- in. From Sesklo. A heavy vase with open

A <"4, moutn anci straight rim. There is a boss at the lip and a moulded spiral coil hanging on each
side of this, suggesting the horns of an animal's head. Coarse grey clay with light brown
surface. (Fig. 47 ; as Prehistoric Thessaly, fig. 8a (Rakhmani, B 1).)

A 245 FRAGMENT, moulded. L. 4 in. From Tsangli. Below the lip is a vertical row of

bosses, of which three are preserved. Brown clay. (Fig. 47.)
