incurved rims, 5 has the lip painted inside and out with brown-black colour. No. 6, part of
a large roughly made vase with handle, has close thin parallel curves in brown varnish. (Fig. 50.)

FRAGMENTS of plain pottery. L. 2 in. to 35 in. From H. Kosmas (1-3) and sites
near Corinth, as A 261. Rough ware, light brown, reddish and greenish clays. No. 1 is a
hollow base, 2 shows a horizontal ledge-handle, 3 and 4 have the bases of broad flat loop
handles, and 5 is the curved lip of an open bowl. As Korakou, p n.

FRAGMENTS of incised ware. L. 4 in. to if in. From the Aspis at Argos (1-3), and
Mycenae (4). Very rough pottery coarsely incised with hatching. No. 1 is red, 2 is red inside
and black outside, 3 is black throughout, 4 is red, with smooth surface. No. 1 has a close-
barred rectangle, 2 has a large herring-bone pattern, 3 has oblique hatching in two directions
above a sharp shoulder, four is a flat loop handle with two waved lines incised. (Fig. 50.)

[Coarse ware of this type may belong to any Helladic period, but is of primitive origin.
The designs resemble those of the Cretan Middle Neolithic style, A 403.]

MIDDLE HELLADIC (A271-A299).

?. Dull painted geometric pottery (Mattmalerei) from Attica, the Argolid, and

sites near Corinth.

HANDLE. L. 5I in. From Attica. A large round loop set horizontally, probably from
zfiithos. Pale greenish clay, fine but porous, with decoration in dull black pigment. The
handle is enclosed by two curves which form a pointed oval and break into a tassel of radiating
lines at the point of intersection.

FRAGMENTS of similar ware. L. 5 in. to 2 in. Excavated on the Aspis at Argos.
Presented as A 266. Pale green to reddish-yellow clay, rough and sandy; some pieces have a
lighter slip. Simple geometric patterns of open style, crossing groups of parallel lines,
concentric curves, chevrons. A flat loop handle (1) is painted with heavy bands. (Fig. 51.)

FRAGMENTS, similar. L. 3t in. to 2= in. From Argos, as last. Pale dull painted
ware as before, but fine fabric. Hard reddish clay with polished yellow surface. The forms
are sharp and thinly modelled. No. 1 has a long ridge handle pierced with two vertical holes ;
2 shows the spring of a high band handle. Painted decoration of thin parallel lines, in
bands and zig-zags. (Fig. 51.)

FRAGMENTS, similar. L. 2 in. to 5 in. From Mycenae (1-2), Tiryns (3), and sites
near Corinth (4-6), as A 261. Fabric as A 272, and similar patterns, but i, which is apparently
from the hollow side of a cup, has a horizontal waved line below three horizontal bands outside
the lip, and a fringe of four short strokes inside. No. 6, part of a flat-lipped jar from Korakou,
has square chequers among the usual linear patterns. (Fig. 50.)

FRAGMENTS of slipped ware. L. i\ in. to if in. From Mycenae (1/2) and sites
near Corinth (3-5), as "A 261. As Korakou, p. 28. Fabric as A 267 ; fine reddish clay with
polished white to buff slip which is not so thick as the Early Helladic examples, and decoration
in dull brown-black paint, bands of parallel lines drawn in various directions. No. 5 has a
