rays, and fronds of seaweed growing on rocks are all that can be distinguished. On the lip and

FRAGMENTS from rims of bowls. L. 4.5 in., 3 in. Buff clay, with painted design
in brown-black varnish ; the insides of both pieces are covered
with this colour. The pattern on both is a band of spiral coils
between horizontal lines ; the centre discs of the spirals and
the bands on the rims of the bowls are dotted with white, and
there are white lines on other bands. In 1 the spirals are linked
together by three lines, in 2 by one only.
FRAGMENTS of bowls. Ht. 4 in., 33 in. Similar ware
to last; on each is a broad band of spiral coils between horizontal
lines, in the dark varnish. On the plain dark bands are thinner
lines in white. No. 2 has also a wave-pattern on either side of
the spiral band. The round base of 1 is pierced with a small
hole, as the filler vases ; this was bored from the outside
while the clay was wet (Fig. 140). No. 2 has a small lump
of clay impressed on the rim.
FRAGMENTS of bowls. Ht. 31 in., 3 in. Reddish
clay, with dark yellow slip and patterns in red-black varnish.
On both pieces is a band of coiled leaf pattern between
plain bands ; inside 1 is a band of leaves detached in pairs,
very crudely drawn, and horizontal lines ; in 2 conventional
twigs set diagonally in a horizontal band, and similar lines

FRAGMENT from lip of jar. L. ji in. Red clay,
with yellow slip on which are painted a row of double leaves
in red on the shoulder, and at the rim a row of single
leaves in white on a red band. Below are straight and zigzag-
lines in white on red.

clay, with lustrous surface. On shoulder are a zig-zag line
and a band of leafy twigs set diagonally ; plain horizontal
lines in threes below, in brown-black varnish.
