A 719. GOBLET. Ht. 9! in. Perhaps Cretan fabric ; bought 1907. Part of foot restored.
A large bowl, shape as A 712, with two vertical loop handles, mounted on a
slender solid stem with flat foot. Red clay with dull yellowish surface, and
decoration in red varnish. On each side of the bowl are two goats rearing up to
a central tree, strips of herring-bone pattern in the field. Lip and handles
are covered with varnish ; stem and foot are ringed with broad bands.

A 720i-3. FRAGMENTS from rim and bodies of vases. L. 2} in. to yi m- Ped or yellow clay
covered with chalky yellow slip. The patterns are curved rays, closely set. No. 1 has a ring" of
vertical zigzags outside these (Fig. 159). In 3 the black varnish has turned bright red.
[These rays are descended from the toreutic ' foliate bands' of the Palace style as in
A 702, etc.]
