tbat the painter who could have borrowed — as we have seen — the idea of including the Calling
of the First Disciples into the iconographic program of his retable from a manuscript of the
Meditations of Pseudo-Bonaventure, might also have been attracted by a text similar in cbaracter
to the quoted above or even directly mide use of this description of the event, although he
evidently patterned bis executioner after the tormentors in the images of the Flagellation.

The retable with the legend of St John the Baptist, of which three panels are now in the
National Museum in Warsa w, is an interesting contribution to the quite rich set of Spanish
monuments devoted to this Prophet and Saint and created by the devotion of the people, who
even much later still believed that
