4. The Annunciation, Florence, Museo Nazionale (after Spatgotik am Oberrhein)

The veil of Mary was white, the mantle of St Joseph green, the Royal dress dark violet, white
and greenish. The execution of the Warsaw relief in the Upper Rhineland seems very probable.
It may be proved by stylistic comparisons with the artistic production of this region presented
at the exhibition held in 1970 in Karlsruhe: „Late Gothic in the Upper Rhineland". In the ca-
talogue of this exhibition we find the rich comparative materiał in the light of which the Warsaw
relief appears to be the Work of the high artistic value, bearing palpable affinities with several works
of the Upper Rhenish milieu. The closest to the Warsaw relief is the compartment of the main
altar in the CarthusianChurch in Strasbourg, with the Adoration of the Magi, exccuted ca 1450-60 by
carvers and painters at the local workshop51(fig. 5). Both reliefs from Strasbourg and from Warsaw
are distinguished by unusual subtlety of sculptural technique, precise claboration of the details
of anatomy and costmne, and — as far as the composition is concerned — the crowding of
numerous figures in the comparatively smali space. The setting of figures in both reliefs is very
similar although one reverses the composition of the other. The most important figurę — the
Yirgin with the Child — is seated in a profile view. It is placed at the right side in the Warsaw
relief and at the left side in the Strasbourg relief. In both cases the Yirgin and the oldest King
kneeling in front of Her make out the foreground of the composition. The Infant Jesus vividly
iuterested in the receptacle with gold offered by Melchior becomes a link between these two per-
