R o m e: Here, we shall indicate three examples of the rendering of female faces according to
the same formuła as that used in the image of St. Anne of Faras. The formuła can be traced back
to Byzantine patterns known from the earliest icon of the Theotokos enthroned, assisted by
St. Theodore and St. George10. 1. The Roman catacomb of Commodilla includes (in the sepul-
chral chapel) a wali painting of the Theotokos enthroned, assisted by St. Felix and Adauct.
The kneeling figurę (of widów Turtura) (Fig. 8) dated after 528, is a new element17; 2. Theotokos
enthroned, shown in the mosaic in the apse of Sta. Maria in Domnica, 9th cent. (Fig. 9)18. 3 Theo-
tokos with Infant Jesus, icon in the basilica Sta. Francesca Romana19.
