15. St. Lukę, the Gospel of St. Augustine, Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, Cod. 286 (after
F. Wormald, The Minialures of the Gospels of St. Augustine, Cambridge, 1954)

Yet iconographic research into the scenę of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, and the
Conception of Anne, depending upon the former, mainly rests on a statement made by bishop
Kyros of Smyrne, directed to his new parish on Christmas day: Fratres, natałis Dei Sahatoris
nostri Jesu Christi silenlio colatur, quia solo audito in sancta Virgine conceptus esl, erat enim Ver-
6um53 (Brothers, the birth of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ should be celebrated in silence
because it was through silence that He was conceived in the Holy Virgin, because He
was the Word)

In his treatise De Spiritu Sancto, Basil the Great reminds us that „Our Fathers" instructed
that mysteries should be celebrated in silence: Nonne ex minime publicata et arcana hac doctrina,
■quam patres nostri silentio ąuieto minimeąue curioso servarunt? Quippe illud probe didicerant,
mysteriorum reverentiam silentio conservariu.
