The earliest pieces of evidence include excerpts from the following authors: Ephraim the
Syrian: Ingressus est (Logos) per aurem et secreto uterum inhabitavit, e ventre porro exiens, non
sohit sigilla virginalia63. David Nicetas insisted, that Mary herself was conceived in a barren
womb more through the word of Promise than by the force of Natura64.

The finał interpretation of the image of St. Anne must depend on the main views of Mariologists,
as auoted above, because the way in which Anne conceived was, modelled on the Conception of
Christ, both ideologically and iconographically.
