called Pepi-nefer.41 The excavators dated Mastaba V to the 6th Dynasty, but
vessels of the shape in ąuestion, which appeared as early as in the
Predynastic Period, are in generał dated not later than to the 4th Dynasty.42
From the same mastaba comes a calcite spouted bowl of the kind occurring
also in the mastaba of Isi43 (ill. 4), and a calcite ovoid jar with a short neck,
madę in two pieces.44

Stone vessels were also found in numerous tombs dated to the Middle
Kingdom. Usually there were one to four vessels in a tomb; there are,
however, two exceptions deserving particular attention. No less than 24
calcite vessels were deposited in or near burial shaft NO XXIII (ill. 5).45
Among the Warsaw vessels 19 specimens can be identified beyond doubt as
coming from that deposit; some other vessels found with them are now in
the Louvre, among them a cylindrical, flat-based jar with a lid46 and a
remarkable, three-legged cylindrical calcite jar with a conical lid madę of
schist.47 The deposit lacked chronological uniformity and included vessels
ranging in datę from the late Old Kingdom to the maturę Middle Kingdom.
To the Old Kingdom datę, for example, a large cylindrical ointment jar
with thick walls48 and other jars of the same type, smaller, but with the
