materiał is a coarse, nummulitic limestone, characteristic rather of the
Memphite area than of Edfu, with large numbers (131 and 132) written in
black ink on the sides of two of the blocks,5 seemingly by a skilled European
hand, and looking like the inventory numbers from excavations. But which
excavations? The Edfu necropolis is rather excluded from consideration on
the grounds of the type of stone.

In the guidebook for the Ancient Art Gallery, published in 1955, one of the
blocks was described in the following way: “Fragment of a large funerary stela.
