4. Pottery vessels
of so called "Metallic
ware" from Tell Rad

(2,4), dated to the
Early Jazirah lllb period.

were been conducted, the largest of which were executed by Dedrick Meijer
(1976, 1977 and 1979)16 and Bertile Lyonnet (1989-90).17
Sites selected for excavation by the Polish mission were chronologically
linked with the Early Jazirah periods although on each of them some
occupation traces from other periods were also found. In 1988 excavations
were started on two sites: Tell Abu Hafur and Tell Djassa el-Gharbi, located
on wadi Rigle north-west of al-Hassake, on areas assigned for flooding.18
Tell Abu Hafur extended on ca. 3 hectares and was about 20 m high.
The oldest layer contained Ubaid pottery, higher layers belonged to the Uruk
period and were covered by another six Early Jazirah II (?) and III layers.19 * On
the south-eastern slope of the tell a part of an Early Jazirah lllb residential
ąuarter was unearthed. Mud-brick houses, with plastered interior walls,
composed largely of three rooms and a courtyard, were lined along an irregularly
stone paved narrow Street. A number of installations such as fireplaces, bread
ovens (arab. tannur), or smali plastered basins were found in the houses.
