Both archangels are identified by the inscriptions painted in black over their
heads as Michael and Gabriel. Michael is depicted on the left side of the
entrance, and Gabriel is on the right. They are represented standing frontally,
holding the attributes in both hands. The archangels' wings near the door-
jambs are outstretched and turned slightly upwards so as to form a kind of
arch or baldachin, those on the wali side are outstretched too and extended
diagonally down the figures1 sides. The wings of both figures are decorated
with thin, simple straight lines denoting plumage and the pattern of human
eyes with irises and upper lids painted in black. The faces of the archangels
are very regular and oval, surrounded by thick curled hair with a centre
parting and forming a kind of high chignon on top of the head. The hair
