The bones generally are well formed and there is
no sign of deformity in association with the
cranial distortion, except in certain of the ribs,
notably the 8 th and 9 th of each side whiqh
exhibit the following curious condition. The body
of the rib presents the appearance of having been
pressed upon posteriorly so that a wide shallow
depression is produced. At the same time the upper
and lower borders opposite the depression are
slightly excavated. The part of the rib affected is
beyond the angle in each case. The inner surface
of these ribs shows very little of the external con-
dition and is nearly smooth.
It is difficult to account for this peculiar appear-
ance. It is certainly not pathological, but may have
be caused by some form of persistent pressure
acting on the bones symmetrically while still young
and pliable, as it is present at the same level on
each side of the body.
