PLATE XL//. CONT/NUED.

271. Calcareous stone. Height, 1 foot 5I inches. From the temple (Golgoi).
Upper portion of a statuette, broken off across the thighs; with conical cap; arms

hanging by the sides; a broad belt passing between the legs, with a diamond-shaped
ornament in low relief in front. Traces of red color all over the body and belt. Tip of
nose broken by rough handling after discovery; right side of the head mutilated.

272. Calcareous stone. Height, 1 foot 4 inches. From the temple (Golgoi).

Male figure; head, right arm and right leg wanting; the left leg broken off above
the knee. The figure is nude in front, with a garment hanging in folds from the
shoulders on either side, as far as the line of the breasts. The hair hangs down the back
in a wide mass of long tresses of same length; from the left shoulder hangs a pouch; below
is the projecting end of a sword or dagger; under the left hand is held a small lyre, rudely
sculptured. The execution is vigorous, and the statue is sculptured in the round.

A monolithic group, representing a male-headed Sphinx, bearded and with conical cap,
side by side with a lion. The face and body of the lion, except the front part, are broken
away. The right leg of the Sphinx, and part of the body also, are broken off. On the
Sphinx's breast traces of a broad necklace, painted in green and red, now visible only by
passing a wet sponge over it. The Sphinx seems to have some resemblance to the Assyrian
human-headed bulls found by Layard, at Nineveh, with wing rudely sculptured. The head-
dress looks more like the Egyptian pshent, or Persian mitre. The beard is indicated in
formal curls.

274. Calcareous stone. Height, 1 foot 5J inches. From the temple (Golgoi).
Figure, draped on the shoulders, with high conical cap; the left arm broken off

at the shoulder, the right arm below the shoulder; legs below the middle of the thighs
wanting; the left leg slightly in advance. On the edge of the cap, over the centre of
the forehead, a bow is tied. The hair, projecting in curls on the forehead, falls on
either shoulder in front, in three long tresses, and on the back in a broad mass, evenly
cut at the bottom. The drapery falls in front over the breasts, in carefully but formally
