right arm, now broken away, was probably in same position as in No. 394 ; left arm hangs at the
side. Dress, a sleeveless chiton.

396. Height, 2}i inches.

Fragment of female figure, of good Greek style ; flat, low, cylindrical head-dress with
peplos falling behind ; hair in twisted rolls about the forehead ; left arm hangs at the side, wearing
an armlet; naked to the waist, below which some drapery is visible. The left hand of another
figure rests on the right shoulder, indicating that this is the left-hand figure of a group.

397. Red terra cotta. Height, 2] ;] inches.

Upper portion of female figure, of good Greek style. High head-dress (broken), from
which falls a peplos ; dress, a thin chiton and diplois, revealing the form as far as below the waist,
where a himation encircles the body in thick folds, and is grasped by the hands at each side.
Left arm broken away.

398. Red terra cotta, exterior now gray. Height, \y2 inches.

Fragment. A cista, or casket or box, such as was carried in processions by women per-
sonifying a goddess, or by her attendants. Similar cistcc are seen in the left hand of several entire
statuettes (e.g. PI. XLVIIL, 376; XLIX., 377, 378), where they belong to the worship of Demeter.

399. Red terra cotta, exterior now brownish gray. Height, 4% inches.

Fragment of a group ; sphinx, with female head, beside a draped sitting human figure ;
the latter not unlikely Demeter.

400. Red terra cotta, exterior now yellowish brown. Height, 2% inches.

Fragment of representation of Demeter, with calathus and peplos ; enthroned; clad in a
himation. Left hand held to waist; its end broken away. Much worn and defaced.

401. Gray terra cotta. Height, 2^ inches.

Fragment of draped female figure, showing a triple necklace ; peplos falling at the side ;
sleeved chiton over the right arm and breast, with clasps or buttons on the sleeve.

402. Red terra cotta. Height, 2}i inches.

Fragment. Head and bust of female ; hair in rolls about forehead ; peplos over back of
head ; sleeved chiton. Gra^co-Roman in appearance.
