LIBATION VASE.

i. Detail of Handle.

2. Enlargement of Bird-decoration at base of handle.

3. Lion-head spout, enlarged, showing right side.

4. Libation vase. Bronze. Shades of green. Height 9^ inches. Diameter of intake,
including flare at mouth, 1 y^ inch; aperture 5/g inch. Length of spout 8yi inches. Handle, as
shown in detail, length 3% inches. Diameter of base, 2j/g inches; of body 4 inches. Found at
Curium in a vault.

The body is ovoid, somewhat pointed at the ends. The base and mouth flare decidedly.
The handle is of open work; the detail shows the remains of the original markings which ran
parallel with the openings and the edges. When inverted the pattern in the handle bears a strik-
ing resemblance to the "sacred tree." At the body end of the handle is a bird-ornamentation,
with extended head and spread wings marked to indicate feathers. A chain encircles the bird's
neck and the handle. The spout is set horizontally at the greatest diameter of the body, and
about 100 degrees from the handle. It is decorated with incised rope ornamentation. The spout
ends in a lioness' head, with open mouth. The angle in the spout is due to corrosion. The ma-
terial of the upper part is thinner than that below. The whole stands very firmly on its base.
