Buckles and Fibulas.

i. Buckle. Bronze. Greenish brown. Length 2 inches. Width i1/* inch; at hinge
lyb inch. Found at Dali (Idalium).

Shows trefoil pattern. Hinged in centre. The tongue has a downward curve at the end,
and a knob on top to hold the strap. On the under side and at the other end are two pierced pro-
jections which passed through the other extremity of the strap. A wire fastened through the
holes in these projections would hold the strap in place.

2. Buckle. Bronze. Length 1Y5 inch. Found at Dali (Idalium).

In one piece, with movable tongue. Pierced projection below to hold strap in place.

3. Buckle. Bronze. Length 1^ inch. Width \y% inch. Found at Dali (Idalium).

In one piece, with a movable curved tongue. The strap evidently passed through the
rectangular hole, and was bent back upon itself.

4. Fibula. Bronze. Length of shaft i3^ inch. Height of bow i3/ie inch.
Found in tombs at Curium (Episkopi), as were also the others here shown.

Complete. Pin-shaft is straight and slim ; bow is plain ; shield is perfect; spiral spring
has one turn.

5. Fibula. Bronze.

This is a perfect specimen of a pattern represented by eight examples in the collection.
They vary in length from 3 to \T>/A inches. In general construction and principle they are identi-
cal with the modern safety-pin, the only difference being due to the lightness and strength of our
materials. The point of the long slim pin-shaft was caught and held by a shield, while the other
end was twisted into a spiral spring. The bow of the pin in these examples resembled an inverted
V, with an ovoid bulb at the angle. The arms of the V were composed of two tapering parts on
