Phoenician Glass. Opaque, purple, shades of green and blue, grey and white, in some cases
iridescent. Found in Phoenician tombs, No. i at Kition (Citium) and the rest at Dali (Idalium).
These objects are in general very heavy as compared with the Greek glass shown elsewhere in
this volume ; the patterns are, however, for the most part similar, but much smaller,

i. Vase, shaped like an egg-glass. Opaque glass. Purple, with grey spots and some
iridescent hues. Height 2 inches. Diameter (base) 1 Hie inch; (mouth) i13/i6 inch.

Apparently made from a tube, flattened to a base with raised rim about same, and flared
above to a bulb, the upper part of which was forced inward to form a hemispherical cavity at top.
The inside of base is hollow. The egg-shell shown in Plate CVI, No. 7, was found in this cup.

2. Vase. Glass, heavy, green, with white incrustation outside, particularly at the top.
Height 33/ie inches. Diameter (base) \i/% inches; (neck) i/^ inch; (mouth) i7/i6 inch.

Flat base, conical body and cylindrical neck. Lips are wide and drooping. The glass is
thick and the vase quite heavy. There are fifteen of similar pattern in the collection.

3. Vase. Glass resembling porcelain in effect. Grey and white tints. Height 35^ inches.
Diameter (base) i3/g inch; (body) 2% inches; (neck at its base) iVic, inch; (mouth) 1% inch.

Base is flat and distinct, with a conical part joining it with the body of the vase. Body is
a flat spheroid; the neck is slightly conical, and disproportionately long. The lips are distinct but
somewhat irregular. The sides are ornamented with the scallop or fish-scale pattern. Originally
there were three handles, parts of the same being still visible.

4. Vase. Glass. Green, with purple and silver iridescent tints. Incrusted on inside.
Height 37/ig inches. Diameter (base) 1^ inch; meek) Vie inch; (mouth) l/A inch.

Bottom is concave, and the body is of elongated conical shape. The neck is cylindrical
with a bulge in the lower part. Flat lips. The collection contains six similar to this and a very
great number of examples of smaller size but identical pattern.
