Alabaster Objects. Phoenician.
i. Vase. Lenticular. Height 35^ inches. Diameter (body) 2 vie inches, (top) 2 inches.
Found in a tomb at Amathus.
The body is flattened on two sides, but expands into an oval top with a circular aperture.
Perforated ears on the sides for handles. The cavity inside is round. Shown four-fifths of actual
size.
2. Vase. Barrel-shaped. White alabaster, calcined. Height 4^ inches. Diameter
(mouth) 2j4 inches, (base) 1% inch, (body) 3*/% inches, (across handles) 45/ig inches. Found at
Amathus.
The base is flat with a sunken surface in the centre. The body flares like a barrel, the
same lines being continued into the handles, which extend as high as the top of the vase and are
perforated. The upper part of the body contracts. The exterior is decorated with raised bands
top and bottom, with a third series two-thirds from the bottom, dividing the surface into two regis-
ters: the lower is decorated with curved patterns, the upper with angular. The general surface
shows cross-hatching. The material is white and almost chalky, apparently having been exposed
to fire. Shown four-fifths of true size.
3. Vase. Amphora-shaped. Height 334 inches. Diameter (base) il/> inch, (body) 23/g
inches, (top) 2%6 inches. Found at Amathus.
The base is slightly rounded on the bottom. The body is about two-thirds of an ovoid,
with a sharp break in the line at the junction with the neck, which is flaring and conical. The rim
is a raised band. Interior is shaped like the outside. Shown four-fifths of true size.
4. Alabastron. Stone of a silvery tint. Height 15^ inches. Diameter (top) 5% inches,
(body) 434 inches, (including ears) 6 inches. Found at Amathus.
Unfinished: surface is very rough and shows marks of tools. Bottom is rounded; body
