had their sides raked with cruel steel scorpions, and then burn-
ing torches applied to the lacerations. What a powerful grace
was needed to support poor human nature in such a terrible
conflict ! That grace alone explains the heroic constancy of
the millions of martyrs throughout the world of every age,
every clime, every country, whose sufferings and death for
justice’ sake form one of the many convincing arguments of the
divinity of the Church of Christ.
