The Tablet: “This book is exactly what it professes to be, a
guide for those who visit Rome with the devotione Catholica and not
with the curiositate poetic a of which Petrarch speaks. The glory of
the Eternal City is not in its picture galleries, or even in its monuments
of classical antiquity, still less in the monstrosities which have been
erected since it became a modern capital. Its treasures are the tombs
of the Apostles, the ancient churches of Christendom, the places where
the martyrs won their palms and where their bodies lie in the Cata-
combs, and the homes of the Saints. There, too, as Blessed Peter
Canisius says, is ‘ the Apostolic Seat, which Christ exalted above the
chair of Moyses, and to which He subjected all Christian kings and
princes.’ For those to whom Rome means all this, the book which
Father Chandlery has given us is invaluable. . . . The work teems
with information.”
The Catholic Times: “This beautiful volume, copiously illus-
trated and beautifully printed, meets a want long felt. Hitherto
pilgrims to Rome have had to trust to guide-books generally written
by non-Catholics, and naturally from the non-Catholic point of view.
Here, however, we have a guide-book by a Catholic writer.
“Not written from the archaeological point of view merely, but
from the topical and historical, it gives the reader a first-class account
of the sights of the Eternal City, through which the pilgrim journeys
with the author always at hand to keep him in the footsteps of those
saints whose lives and deeds make that aroma which charms the
Christian visitor to the centre of Christendom. . . . Father Chandlery
has given Catholics a book on Rome which they will treasure and
preserve.”
The Philadelphia Standard and Times: “The book is a
storehouse of detailed description and chronicle and legend, set down
by the loving hand of devotion and delight. All the stories that
cluster around each of Rome’s time-honoured shrines are gathered
here.”
The Southern Star of Atlanta : “ We bespeak for this
work a great demand, as it certainly deserves it, for it is our opinion
that this is one of the best books that has ever been written about the
‘ Holy City.’ ”
Sacred Heart Review : “ Such a book is not one to borrow
from a friend or to take from a public library ; but rather to own and
frequently consult. ... For those who have already visited the
Eternal City, this book will revive the memories of past delights.”
