General Information.
1. The Papal Blessing.—The Pope’s Apostolic Blessing,
with Plenary Indulgence for the hour of death, may be obtained
for friends and relatives at home by applying to Signor Nicola
Calabresi, 77, 78, Piazza della Minerva, who undertakes to
procure the necessary signature at the Vatican.
Signor Calabresi also undertakes to get beads, crucifixes,
and other religious articles blessed by the Pope.
2. Feasts.—To follow the religious feasts and functions in
Rome day by day, it is advisable to purchase a copy of the
Diario Romano, price 40 centesimi.
3. Visits to Churches.—Except the seven great Basilicas
and the churches where there is perpetual adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament, the other churches are closed from twelve
to three, and in summer from 12 to 4.30 or 5. Some of
the older churches (v.g., S. Anastasia, S. Pudenziana, etc.)
are open only in the early morning, or on the Station and
Feast-day.
4. Confessions are heard in English at S. Silvestro in
Capite, S. Giorgio (Via S. Sebastiano, Piazza di Spagna),
S. Andrea delle Fratte, the Gesii, S. Alfonso, S. Isidoro,
S. Clemente, and at the special confessionals in St. Peter’s, the
Lateran, and St. Mary Major, marked Lingua Anglica.
5. Ecclesiastical Colleges.—As the students of the several
national Colleges form such an interesting feature in the streets
of Rome, it will be interesting to learn how to distinguish the
costumes of a few.
American, North. Black edged with blue. Red sash.
American, South. Black lined with blue. Blue sash.
Apollinaria. Purple cassock and soprana. Crimson sash.
Armenian. Black with wide sleeves. Red sash.
Belgian. Black cassock and soprana. Sash bordered with
red.
Bohemian. Black cassock and soprana. Sa'h, maroon
bordered with yellow.
