longed to the Candrakida1, a teacher who was praised by Pra-
dyumna, Mdnadeva and other suri’s (v. 8)2. And he also tells us that
his work was undertaken on the advice of his fellow-disciple, the
ciccirya Municandra. Devendra seems to be the author also of
other w^orks3, but these do not concern us here, where we have
only to deal with his commentary on the Uttaradhyayana.

The third verse of the prcisasti begins by giving a quotation
from v. 3 of the prasasti of the end of Santisfiri’s w'ork, and in
vv. 4—5 Devendra continues thus:

tasyali4 samuddhrtci cdisd sutramdtrasya vrttika |
ekapdthagcdd mandabuddhmdm hitaJcdmyayd ||
dtmasamsmarandrthaya tathd mandadhiyd maiyci \
athdparddham enam me kscimantu srutasdlinah ||

This coincides with a statement occurring in the introductory ver-
ses of the tlkd, where the author says that it has been extracted
from the old commentary, which contains manifold things, but that it
is ekapdthagata i. e. ’only follows one reading’, and continues thus:

arthdntardni pdthdntardni sutre ca vrddhatlkdtah \
boddhavydni yato’yam prdrambbo gamanikdmdtram ||

He consequently intended not to mention either cirthdntcira's or
other patheds, but he has, nevertheless, done this in some few
passages of his work. We have already seen that he found it
more interesting to adorn his composition with a series of tales
and legends, which are found only in a very much abbreviated form
in the work of his predecessor, but have been enriched by him
with materials taken from other sources. Also, he gives more
metrical quotations and sentences than does Santisuri, and, when
there are quotations from other works —■ e. g. from the dream-
books &c. in the comm, on chapter VIII — Santisuri is content

2 TJddyotana was the founder of the Brhadgaccha, and installed his
successor samv. 994 = 938 A. D. according to Weber Catalog II, 1004.
But in the same passage Prculyumna and Mdnadeva are spoken of as
two of his immediate predecessors, although according to other authorities
(ibid. p. 1005) they were not counted as spiritual heads of the gaccha.

in Sanskrit and Prakrit, printed at Palitana in 1905.
