and are explained in SBE. XLV, 197 n. 7—8.
63. S. mentions a varia lectio tassa instead of tattha in the
first half-verse. According to him the second half is also read thus:
kosassa vi ya jo tattha chabbhdgo uvarimo bhave ||
D. also mentions this varia lectio. With this verse cp. Aup.
S. § 167: tassa joyanassa je se uvarille gdue tassa navi gduyassa
je se uvarille chabbhdye tattha yarn siddha . . . citthanti (the word
used here is gduyci, which should be the same as S. gavyuta -
krosa H. 887; a gavyuta or krosa is = 2.000 dan da's or dhanus\
for other measures cp. Kaut. pp. 106—107).
65. I have put jesim into the text against the Mss. on the
authority of S. who says: utsedhah . . . yesdm siddhdndm yah . .
bhavati.
67. S. does not mention sampannd. The explanation of
jivaghand in D. runs thus: jivds ca te ghands ca susirapuranato
nicitd jivaghandh \
68. S. mentions a varia lectio logaggadese. This would cer-
tainly be better, but is not adopted either by him or by D. for
which reason I have left it out. In the second half-verse he seems
to have read siddhirn ya.
70. The reading iccee is corroborated by S.: iti . . ete prthi-
vyadayah sthdvards trividhdh j
71. S.: evarn ete . . . pathanti ca ega-m-ege tti ekaike | — It
is not clear what bdyara- (= badara-) originally meant. Probably
it is, however, ’of the size of the fruit of Zizyphus jujuba', thus
arriving at the meaning gross, fully developed’.
73. D.: pandu tti pdnclavam | dpdnclurd isacchubhratvabhaja
ity arthah | uktam varnabhedasadvidhatvam ilia ca pandugrahanam
krsnddivarndndm api svasthdnabheddntara sambhcwasucakam | pana-
ko suksmarajorupah sa eva mrttikd panakasya ca nabliasi vivartta-
mdmasya loke prthivUvendrudhatvdid bhedenopdddnam !! The expla-
nation is not wholly clear, nor am I aware of the existence of a
word panaka- with the sense required here. Jacobi translates it
by clay’, and the word may probably be = s. panka, as I conclude
from the form panao pankah Desin. 6, 7.
74. lonusa- is rendered by ksdramrttikd in the Avacuri. In
the JIvaviyara v. 4 it is only us am. The word probably means
