beauty, as applied to the art of painting, does not consist in multiplicity of
colours, but in the just combination of a few.
The subjects which accompany these observations have been aquatinted
to assist in producing the requisite force ; but drawings from them, with
respect to the outline, coloured, or rather painted, according to the directions,
will be in their effects far more pleasing; and it is necessary that every tint
should be mixed and compared with the copy, as will be found in the
subsequent remarks.
The first coloured subject is divided into three progressive states, to explain
the method of proceeding with every stage of the drawing.
