After beholding the wonders of the Montarozzi, the
attention is naturally directed to the city from which these
tombs were peopled. " If such were its sepulchres," we
may exclaim with Lanzi, " what must have been its
palaces!" Its antiquity, power, and magnificence are
naturally inferred,—what was its history 1
