This remains Lhe standard biography of Granach. It is based on the
study of documents, many of which are printed in extenso, and contains
a collection of materials of the utmost value to any future biographer.
The catalogue of Cranach’s works, especially of the paintings, needs
much revision.

A popular biography, intended for the general reader, without pretence
to original research.

A short summary, founded chiefly on Schuchardt. The « Pseudo-Grii-
newald » pictures are attributed to « the school of Cranach ».

The biographer’s aim is to present Cranach « als ganzen Menschen,
nicht bloss als Kiinstler ». He therefore includes in his book much of the
history of the Reformation period.
