BRIEF OUTLINE OF DURER’S BIOGRAPHY
1471, May 21. Born at Nuremberg ; third (eldest surviving) child of Albrecht
Diirer, goldsmith, and Barbara Holper. Anton Koberger, printer, was his
godfather.
i486, November 30-1489. Apprenticed to Wolgemut to learn painting.
1490, April 11. Started on his travels. Visited Colmar (1491), Basel (1492-3) and
Strassburg (1493-4).
1494 (after May 18). Returned to Nuremberg. Married Agnes Frey (July 7).
Late in the year travelled to Venice.
1495. Returned to Nuremberg.
1497. Earliest dated engraving, The Four Witches, B.75.
1498. Published the Apocalypse.
1505 (late). Left Nuremberg again for Venice. Visited Bologna (1506), probably
also Padua, perhaps Milan. No engravings were done in 1506.
1507 (early). Returned to Nuremberg.
1511. Published the Great Passion, Life of the Virgin, and Apocalypse (2nd edition).
1512-15. Much employed by Maximilian I, on Ehrenpforte, Prayer-book, Triumphal
Car (designed again in 1518), etc.
1517. Visited Bamberg.
1518. Visited Augsburg at the time of the Diet; drew portraits of great personages
present at it.
1520, July 12. Left Nuremberg on journey to the Netherlands. Visited Cologne,
Antwerp, Brussels, Aachen, Antwerp.
1521. At Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, Malines, Brussels, Cologne. Returned to
Nuremberg in August.
1524-26. Engraved and painted chiefly portraits. Was much engaged in preparing
his books on Measurement and Proportion.
1528, April 6. Died at Nuremberg.
