Mr. T. D. Barlow, Manchester 115x112
3. THE RAVISHER
7?.g2 O.i H.893 7?.1 M.i K.i F.(i) Bw.i Engraving

Date: probably 1495.
Watermarks : ‘ bull’s head ’ (Ha.i) ; ‘ high crown ’ (Ha.4).
This unsigned plate is the earliest of the generally accepted engravings by Diirer,
and there is a consensus among the recent authors of chronological catalogues in
making it No. 1, except Pauli, who names 13 other engravings before it. I consider,
however, that Hans Seeker has succeeded in vindicating Durer’s authorship of the
Large Courier and the Conversion of St. Paid, engravings which go with B. 92 as
members of an early unsigned group.
Springer distinguishes three varieties : («) Before a scratch near the trunk of the
tree on the left. (&) With this scratch, (c) With a second scratch, near the first,
cutting obliquely across the woman’s veil.
