Signature : monogram (with small d) at foot of plate near the centre.
Date: probably 1495-96.
Watermarks : ‘ bull’s head ’ (Ha.i); ‘ Gothic p ’ (Ha.3) ; on later impressions,
‘orb’ (Ha.5); ‘dog’ (Ha.13). Early impressions shew scratches, which wear off
later.
Drawing: Holy Family at Erlangen (pen and ink), L.430. Virgin and Child in
H. Oppenheimer collection (Diirer Soc., III. 3.)
The insect has often been erroneously called a dragon-fly or grasshopper. Its
antennae and wings can only be those of a butterfly, though the body is too long.
