5. THE OFFER OF LOVE
B.93 O.4 H.891 J?.2 M.8 K.q F.(4) Bw.4 Engraving
Signature.: monogram in centre at foot of plate.
Date: probably 1496.
Watermarks: ‘ brill’s head ’ (Ha.2) ; ‘ Gothic p ’ (Ha.3) ; ‘ high crown ’ (Ha.4).
There are two states, according to Springer. I. Before re-working. II. The
outlines of the figures retouched ; the mountains in the distance have disappeared.
This alteration cannot be Diirer’s work. Early impressions shew scratches.
The subject is nothing more than mercenary “ love.” It occurs frequently among
prints of the period, often with a companion subject, in which an old woman gives
money to a young man. Koehler doubts Diirer’s authorship of this excellent
and thoroughly characteristic plate because he finds the subject shocking; in this
he hardly shows his usual discretion.
