17. THE COOK AND HIS WIFE
B.84 O.14 H.963 JR. 10 M.13 K.22 jF.(i5) Bw.iS Engraving
Lower border-line extends to edge of plate on left side.
Signature: monogram in centre at foot of plate.
Date: probably 1497.
Watermarks : ‘ bull’s head ’ (Ha.i) ; ‘ Gothic p ’ (Ha.3).
Drawing (?): H. F. Seeker {Zeitschr.f. bild. Kunst, 1918, N.F., xxix, 177) connects
with this engraving a drawing at Danzig of a naked fat man, which he regards as
a study for the cook. This is rather far-fetched, and the suggestion that the drawing
was prior to the engraving was, in fact, withdrawn by Seeker himself in a postscript
(ibid, 255).
A new and convincing explanation of the subject was given by Konrad Lange in
1907 (Zeitschr. f. bild. Kunst, N.F., xviii, 94). The title should be “ The Magpie
