Signature : monogram on the water in centre at foot of plate.
Date: about 1501.
Watermarks : ‘ bull’s head ’ (Ha.i), ‘ Gothic p ’ (Ha.3), ‘ high crown ’ (Ha.4).
Drawing: naked woman reclining, dated 1501, in the Albertina (L.466). The
woman was also inspired by Jacopo de’ Barbari’s engraving, “ Victory,” B.23.
This engraving was named by Diirer himself in his Netherlands Journal, “ the sea
monster ” (das Meerwunder). A group freely copied from it on one of the pieces of
