B.53 O.24 H.737 7?.i2i M.31 JC.43 F.(37) Bw.45 Engraving
Signature : monogram on a tablet in left lower corner.
Date: probably 1508.
Watermarks : ‘ bull’s head ’ (Ha.i), ‘ high crown ’ (Ha.4).
St. George holds the banner of a confraternity of St. George, displaying a cross within
a circle, as seen on a woodcut by Altdorfer forming part of the Triumphal Arch (Voss,
Meister der Graphik, III, pl. 16), where it appears that the more elaborate
banner, with four other crosses outside the circle, is that of the Order of St.
George itself. It is possible, however, that here the horizontal lines cut off by
the edge of the plate represent part of one such outer cross. Maximilian always
