66. ST. JEROME SEATED NEAR A POLLARD WILLOW
II. With the monogram.
Some good impressions of the second state (Berlin, London) have a blank patch
measuring 30 x 70 mm. in the top 1. corner, where the plate has evidently been
masked, so that that portion of the surface has not printed. The magnificent im-
pression in the Albertina, here reproduced, has been treated in the same way ; it
will be noticed that the long blades of grass on the top of the rock do not print;
they are found again in later impressions. These vary much in quality, the monogram
being in some cases still strong, while finally monogram and date are quite deprived
of burr, and all the work looks thin and worn.
Watermarks : the earliest impressions have the ‘ high crown ’ (Ha.4) ; later ones
have the ‘ towers ’ (Ha.14), or the armorial watermark, Ha.15.
