Watermarks: ‘ jug ’ (Ha.10), ‘ dog ’ (Ha.13).
Diirer in a letter to Cardinal Albrecht, dated September 13, 1523, says that he had
sent 500 copies of the portrait to the Cardinal some time ago, before he fell ill, but
had received no acknowledgment. The Elector of Mainz used some copies of his
portrait as book-plates.
