338 VIEWS OF THE OLYMPIC PLAIN.

From an eminence near the village, the whole of the Olympic
plain may be seen in a most beautiful point of view. The eye em-
braces the broad and sinuous course of the Alpheios, with the green
and finely feathered hills, decorated with the elegant umbrella pine
and flowering evergreens. Another view towards the east overlooks
a variegated valley bounded by the Eleian hills, surmounted by the
loftier summits of Arcadia, from whose sequestered labyrinths—

the Alpheios is seen eliciting its yellow current, which glides in a
broad channel, along the projecting base of a pointed hill, where the
ruins of Phrixa meet the eye.

1 Pindar, Olymp. 3. v. 48.
