ITALIC TOMB-GROUPS: NARCE 1

fine texture, buff at core, outer surface red. Wheel-
made. The pattern is in creamy white; on the concave
surface, groups of transverse lines on the rim, in the
center, now largely effaced, probably a disk of white,
surrounded by four concentric circles of white. On the
convex surface four groups of concentric circles, three
to a group, drawn with a compass, and alternating with
four groups of parallel chevrons. Bands of white within
and without the ring base, and on the upright surface
next the rim. On the rim a zigzag. Two string holes.
9. Amphora with Incised Double Spiral. Pl.
XXX. M.S.2736, H. 0.25 m., D. 0.26 m. Rim chipped.
Core of fabric reddish; outer surface brownish grey to
black, and well polished, texture of fabric fine; sparse
inclusions chiefly fine grains of mica with occasional
grains of other materials. Wheel-made. On obverse
and reverse an incised double spiral surmounted by a
bird similar in style to the painted birds of Nos. 5, 6, and
7, and framed by two groups of eight parallel lines, curved
to emphasize the shape of the vase. The lower ends of
these lines are adjacent to other groups of eight which
rise diagonally to the handle. On the handles groups of
six diagonals. The spirals and birds on at least one face
of the vase were once filled with red color; the other lines
with white.
10. Similar Amphora. PL XXX. M.S.2737, H.
0.136 m., D. 0.144 m. Intact. Fabric and technique
as in the foregoing and also decoration except that in-
stead of a bird we have a circle enforced within and
without by dots, and adjacent to the lower margins of
the handles curved lines similarly enforced. Traces of
red in all the decoration.
11. Similar Amphora. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2738, H.
0.116 m., D. 0.119 m. Small pieces and one handle
missing. Fabric and technique as in the foregoing.
Faint traces of red color in the diagonals. No supple-
mentary motives.
12. Similar Amphora. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2739, H.
0.125 m., D. 0.12 m. Restored. Fabric and technique
as in the foregoing. Hatched rhomboids above the
spirals and adjacent to the bases of the handles. The
pigment within the incisions seems to have been cream
colored with a slightly pinkish tinge.
13. Amphora. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2788, H. 0.095 m.,
D. 0.11 m. Restored. Less fine fabric than in fore-
going with moderately abundant inclusions of feldspar,
hornblende, quartz and mica. Core of fabric dark cin-
der grey, surface lighter grey tinged with pink. Hand-
made. The ribs are made of ropes of clay pressed into
the wall of the vase while still moist. On the handles,
two shallow incised lines.
14. Similar Amphora. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2741, H.
0.085 m., D. 0.095 m. Restored. Fabric and tech-
nique as in the foregoing.

15. Similar Amphora. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2742, H.
0.085 m., D. 0.094 m. Intact. Fabric and technique
as in the foregoing.
16. Amphora. PL XXXI. M.S.2757, H. 0.067 m.,
D. 0.081 m. Rim chipped. Similar fabric red at core,
outer surface red to black. Handmade. No polish.
On the shoulder an incised zigzag.
17. Skyphos. Pl. XXX. M.S.2751, H. 0.085 m.,
D. 0.099 m. Intact. Fabric as in Nos. 9-12, pale choc-
olate at the core, outer surface darker chocolate. Wheel-
made. The rim is slightly inset, the handles are flat and
angular in outline. Under either handle are three con-
centric foliates incised so deeply as to leave their outlines
embossed on the inside of the cup. The main decoration
on obverse and reverse is an incised bird, similar in style
to the bird on No. 12, except that its body is filled with
dots instead of lines. Below the rim a line of dots in a
rectangular frame. The dots are neatly cut and they
as well as the lines of the decoration were once filled with
red pigment.
18. Two-handled Gup. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2753, H.
0.042 m., D. 0.072 m. Intact. Similar fabric brown at
core, outer surface black. Handmade. Good polish.
The shape is not unlike those which have been called
amphorae, but the neck is deeper and the ridge to which
the handles are joined is sharper. On this ridge are two
incipient knobs.
19. Two-handled Bowl. Pl. XXX. M.S.2733, H.
0.119 m., D. 0.194 m. Restored. Similar fabric, grey
at the core, chestnut brown on its outer surface. Wheel-
made. Twisted handles; sharp median ridge with cen-
tral knobs dividing the neck from the lower part of the
vase. In the uppermost of the six grooves on the neck,
is impressed, on one side of the vase, a line of rope pat-
tern. On the floor of the vase two concentric circles
from which pairs of grooves radiate to four points on the
periphery.
20. Two-handled Cup. Pl. XXXI. M.S.2744, H.
0.075 m., D. 0.082 m. Rim chipped. Similar fabric
and technique. The handles are attached to a sharp
ridge which separates the long neck from the lower part
of the vase and which is ornamented with central knobs
and diagonal hatchings once filled with red color. On
the neck six countersunk disks cut to receive studs of
bronze or some other material. To make sure that the
wall of his pot was not too much weakened by these
countersunk areas, the potter reinforced each on the
inside of the vase with a daub of clay. On the outer
face of one handle there is another countersunk area
which is irregular in outline and was apparently never
filled.
21. Bowl with Ram’s Head Handles. Pl. XXX.
M.S.2734, H. 0.164 m., D. 0.184 m. Restored. Similar
fabric and technique. Below the lip and above the
