ITALIC TOMB-GROUPS: NARCE 64B
Similar fabric brick red throughout, covered with a
cream slip over which designs are painted in red. Top
and base wheel-made; two bulbs handmade. The base
is ornamented with four vertical slits connecting circular
perforations, with a painted zigzag on the rim and cross
hatched triangles and lozenges between and above the
slits. On the two central bulbs between horizontal
bands of zigzags are water birds interspersed with
hatched triangles. The birds’ bodies are almost tri-
angular in shape; parallel to the contours of each are
painted two bands of superadded white, the one near the
edge, the other about the central part of the body. On
the necks of the birds are rows of white dots. This super-
added white is now traceable only by the discolorations
of the underlying red paint. There are traces of white
also on the hatched triangles. The pattern on the small
and defaced remnant of the flaring top is hard to trace
but unmistakable is a row of red triangles above the upper
bulb, and above that a cross hatched pattern probably
similar to that on the base.

outer surface red with some black mottling. Hand-
made. Poor polish. Rim grooved.
6. Bowl. Pl. XXXIX. M.S.947, H. 0.216 m., D.
0.212 m. Piece missing from rim. Similar fabric and
technique. No polish. Rim grooved. Four shallow
knobs on shoulder.

0.132 m. Intact. Similar fabric and technique.
8. Amphora. PI. XXXIX. M.S.935. Holland, PI.
10, Fig. 11, H. 0.33 m., D. 0.282 m. Restored. Interior
of fabric grey to buff; outer surface brown to black.
Wheel-made. Good polish. The two ropes of clay that
form the handles are separated at the base, twisted to
form a loop at the top, and attached to the rim by a strut.
Incised decoration, the main feature of which on obverse
and reverse is a horse with a large head and angular tail.
The right foreleg is drawn with an unbroken line; teeth
seem to be indicated by the short zigzags above and be-
low the line of the mouth. The double spiral on the
hind quarter might be regarded as a brand mark but it
is more probable that it was added merely for decorative
purposes since it appears also on a stag. *
Above either horse is a palmette motive and a pair of
rosettes the petals of which are indicated by hooked lines.
On either side of the handles countersunk dot rosettes.
Two more groups of parallel oblique lines below the
handles and two more on either side of the horses serve
to emphasize the curve of the vase.

lel lines arranged in a W. On the handle three parallel
incised lines.

H. 0.191 m., D. 0.176 m. One handle broken and a part
of the body missing. Fabric of fine texture, buff at core;

The beak is tilted high, the handle is flat and ornamented
with an incised design of a bud with two streamers sur-
mounting two parallel chevrons separated by a line of
dots. At the base of the neck are two horizontal lines
separated by countersunk dots; on the shoulder is a zone
of hatched triangles, their apices down.
