We have been more particular than may in general be thought necessary, in the description
of these two principal parts of the human frame, as an intimate and perfect knowledge of
the bones and muscles of our bodies is the most valuable qualification an artist can possess : the
former give strength stability and general form, and to the latter we are indebted for all our
motions, those evident variations of external shape, and even the expressions of the passions in the
countenance. The most eminent artists of every country have uniformly been well skilled in the
