Exhibition of Dur er’s Work.
225. The Great Column.
Pen and ink, tinted with water-colour. 1210 X 233. Collection : Sloane.
This drawing has not at present been published, but will appear in Lipp-
mann VII. It may be conjectured that it was connected in some way with
the projects of the Emperor Maximilian. A somewhat similar subject,
with a satyr at the top, but without the harpies at the side, occurs in the
Prayer-book of Maximilian (fol. 19 of Giehlow’s edition). Of the four
portions of which the drawing should consist, the lowest has been lost.
226. The Great Column. B. 129. C.D.I. 362.35.
Woodcut. 1604 X 227. Some details are gilded.
The woodcut reproduces the drawing in reverse, with some variations in
detail—see the wreath on the satyr’s head. Complete impressions are very
rare. Impressions dated 1517 are at Berlin and Nuremberg, but the
undated impressions are earlier.
227. A Bird. 1513. Unpublished.
Pen and ink, tinted with water-colour. Dated but not signed. 441 x 319.
Collection : Sloane (5218-84). British Museum postcards, LXXX. 9.
228. 229. Two Designs for the Ends of a Casket. L. 243, 244.
A. Three Musicians. B. Allegory of Youth, Age and Death.
Pen and ink. 190 X 105. Collection : Sloane (5218-131, 132.)
230. The Rhinoceros. 1515. L. 257.
Pen and ink. 274 x 420. Collection : Sloane (5218-161).
The inscription records that the animal was brought alive from India to
the King of Portugal at Lisbon on May 1st, 1513. The drawing must have
been made from a sketch supplied to Diirer by a correspondent. See the
woodcut, B. 136 (no. 144). British Museum postcards, LXXX. 11.
231. Head of a Boy, Bent Down to the Left. L. 247.

Signed and dated. The man’s head is inscribed “ Her Jorg vo eblingen.”
233. The Virgin as Queen of Heaven. Unpublished.
Pen and ink. 130 X 67. Collections : Gelosi, Radford.
Presented by Ernest Radford, Esq. 1896-1-20-2. Probably about 1512.
Diirer Society, XII, 8.

ink, is probably not by Diirer.

by a Goat. L. 259.
Pen and ink, partly tinted with water-colour. 1853-10-8-86.
